Interviewer: To start off, can you tell us more about who you are and what you do?

Amanda: I’m a fourth-year Mathematics and Computer Science student at JKUAT. Alongside my university studies, I’ve been intentional about building my technical skills through programs like ALX, where I completed courses in Introduction to Software Engineering and ProDev Frontend Development. I’m also a proud KamiLimu alumna, an eight-month structured mentorship program that complements classroom learning for Kenyan university students pursuing careers in tech, where I specialized in Cloud Engineering. Most recently, I graduated from the AWS re/Start program and successfully earned my AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my growing interest in cloud computing and the broader world of software engineering.

Interviewer: What inspired you to pursue a career in tech in the first place?

Amanda: My interest in tech started way back in high school because I really enjoyed mathematics, logical thinking, and problem-solving. I was always drawn to the structure of math, how a problem could have multiple paths to a solution, much like debugging code today. When it came time to choose a course, I decided on Mathematics and Computer Science because it combined both interests. I’m particularly drawn to the computer science side because of how mathematical concepts are applied to solve real-world problems. What motivates me most is being able to build solutions that positively impact people in my community.

Interviewer: Is there anything that excites you about a tech career, and what scares you?

Amanda: The impact! What excites me most about a tech career is the impact. Technology allows you to build solutions that can help people immediately or continue benefiting them over time. For example, tools like Git have become fundamental to how developers collaborate today. At the same time, the rapid evolution of technology, especially with the rise of AI, can feel intimidating. Sometimes it triggers imposter syndrome when you see people building applications quickly with AI tools without having studied the fundamentals. However, I see that as motivation. My years of studying computer science have given me a deeper understanding of how systems work. At the end of the day, great software engineers are shaped by the problems they solve and the bugs they debug, not just the tools they use.

Navigating the Tech Landscape

Interviewer: With AI in the picture, how has your vision for your career changed?

Amanda: With the rise of AI, it has become possible to build products much faster, often moving from idea to execution in a very short time. As the pace of innovation increases, I’ve become more interested in the systems that support these applications behind the scenes. This led me to start transitioning toward Cloud Engineering to complement my background in software engineering. In Kenya, Cloud Engineering is a growing field, which makes it an exciting area to explore. I still enjoy building systems and writing code, but expanding into cloud engineering allows me to understand how applications are deployed, scaled, and maintained in real-world environments.

Interviewer: For someone just starting their journey in software engineering, what advice would you give?

Amanda: Start with the foundation. In my case, I began with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript before moving on to frameworks. It’s important to understand the core concepts before diving into more advanced tools and frameworks. It’s also important to avoid “shiny object syndrome”, constantly jumping from one new tool or framework to another. Instead, focus on mastering one language and its ecosystem first. Once you’ve built a solid foundation, learning and adapting to new technologies becomes much easier.

Community and Representation

Interviewer: What role do you see women playing in shaping the future of tech in Africa?

Amanda: Women are contributing at every level, leading teams, building products, mentoring others, and participating in communities that drive innovation. Being part of communities like Tech Sisters Kenya has shown me how women can amplify their impact, not by competing with men, but by ensuring that everyone benefits from diverse ideas and experiences. These spaces encourage learning, collaboration, and mentorship, helping more young women see that they can fully participate and thrive in the tech ecosystem.

Interviewer: Has any specific person inspired your progress or helped shape your vision?

Amanda: One person who has truly inspired me is Dr. Chao Mbogho, founder of the KamiLimu Mentorship Program. She also studied Mathematics and Computer Science and went on to earn her Master’s at Oxford and a PhD in South Africa. Her journey shows that these milestones are possible and motivates me to keep learning and growing. Under her mentorship, I’ve learned what it really means to be guided and supported. In the eight months I spent under her guidance, I learned to give and receive constructive feedback, approach problems creatively with a human-centered eye, and carry the spirit of play and community into my personal and professional journey. Dr. Chao has dedicated nearly a decade to mentoring tech students from universities across Kenya, helping shape the next generation of innovators.

Interviewer: What is the personal value you bring to your tech journey that makes it your own?

Amanda: The personal value I bring to my tech journey is devotion, the deep sense of duty that makes me show up, learn, and contribute, even when it costs me my comfort. It drives me to fully engage with every challenge, to put in the consistent effort required to grow, and to stay focused on my goals.

The “How” of the Journey

Interviewer: How do you see technology empowering people and communities in your country?

Amanda: Technology empowers people and communities in many ways, and hackathons are a perfect example where innovators come together to solve real-world problems within a short time frame. Hackathons give young developers opportunities to collaborate, learn new skills, and sometimes even launch projects that grow into startups or freelancing opportunities. They also expose participants to global collaboration and new perspectives.

Interviewer: What is something you’d really like to talk about that people rarely ask you?

Amanda: People rarely ask about the “how”, the steps I took to get here. I’ve been privileged to have mentors in my first, second, and third years of university. Joining communities gave me a shortcut. I also write down my goals and keep track of my progress. It’s easy to focus on how much is left to do, but I like to look back and see how much I’ve already achieved. It’s about the constant effort of waking up every day and writing code.

Interviewer: How has the outlook on women in tech changed since you started your studies?

Amanda: There has definitely been a positive shift in how women are represented in tech since I started my studies. When I began, there were fewer communities dedicated to supporting women in tech, but now there are many more opportunities.

Interviewer: Why is it important for these women-focused tech communities to exist?

Amanda: Women-focused tech communities are important because they create safe and empowering spaces for girls and women to grow. Many young girls grow up hearing that subjects like mathematics and science are meant for men, which can discourage them from pursuing those paths. These communities challenge those narratives and help women realize that they belong in these spaces. They also provide mentorship, accountability partners, and role models who understand the unique challenges women may face in tech. In Tech Sisters Kenya, we often describe ourselves as “loud, unstoppable, and bold,” and that spirit helps encourage more women to step confidently into the field.

Final Words for Learners

Interviewer: Any final thoughts for those on their tech journey in 2025?

Amanda: My advice for anyone starting or continuing their tech journey in 2025 is simple. First, recognize that AI is here to stay. Instead of fearing it, learn how to use it effectively as part of your workflow. Second, don’t build your career in isolation. Join tech communities, attend networking events, and participate in hackathons. Engaging with other builders exposes you to new ideas and opportunities, and you might even meet your future collaborator or co-founder at one of those events

Many aspiring developers get stuck in the “gray zone”, doing what’s expected without pushing their boundaries. To truly stand out, you need to step into the “growth zone”. This means building new things and actively challenging yourself. Don’t just follow tutorials; create something from scratch. This is where real learning happens and where you build a portfolio that truly sets you apart.

Build, Document, and Share

• Build Your Own Plan: Don’t wait for a job to tell you what to learn. Be intentional about your career path. Set goals and create a roadmap to achieve them.

• Document Everything: Writing about what you’re learning solidifies your knowledge and provides a record of your progress. A weekly work log is a great way to do this. When you’re documenting a project, keep it concise under five pages, with the most important information on the first page. Keep it simple and follow a consistent outline.

• Build in Public: Share your projects and learnings on platforms like GitHub, Substack, or a personal blog. This not only builds your personal brand but also shows potential employers your passion and skills in action.

• Impact over Features: When you showcase your projects, focus on the impact they had, not just the features. Did your project solve a specific problem? Did it help others? Highlight the “why” behind what you built.

Embrace the Struggle and Seek Feedback

The journey is full of challenges, and that’s a good thing. Embrace the struggle; it’s where the most significant learning happens. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Every experienced developer was once a beginner, and most are willing to help.

When you receive feedback, accept it gracefully and apply it. It’s a gift that helps you improve. This shows a level of maturity and a willingness to grow that companies highly value.

Taiwo made it clear: before you chase the latest frameworks or libraries, build a solid foundation. That means really understanding the core elements of programming — variables, loops, functions, data structures — inside out.

When you go deep rather than wide, you’re better equipped to take on complex challenges in any tech stack.

🧠 Think Before You Code

This one hit hard. According to Taiwo, jumping straight into VS Code (or any editor) when starting a new project is a recipe for frustration.

His process?

• 60% planning

• 30% coding

• 10% refining

And his favorite planning tool? Pen and paper. 📝

That intentional pause before coding is what separates spaghetti code from scalable solutions.

Yes, tutorial hell is real. And I’ve been stuck in it more times than I care to admit.

Taiwo’s advice? Embrace Test-Driven Development (TDD) — it forces you to think logically, write real code, and iterate based on results. It’s the difference between passive learning and active doing.

“Learn and build. Don’t just learn and learn.”

That line stuck with me. And honestly, it’s changing how I approach every coding session.

📅 Build a Daily Coding Routine

Want to grow? Then show up daily — even if it’s just for 20–30 minutes.

Taiwo quoted James Clear, author of Atomic Habits:

“You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

This isn’t about grinding non-stop. It’s about consistency, and creating a rhythm that makes growth inevitable.

Lindsay, a multi-talented journalist, digital security trainer, human rights activist, and performer, thrives on living without limits. She embraced the ALX AI starter kit program with the same spirit: fully and fearlessly.

"My motto is: bring it. If I don't know something, I want to stop being ignorant," she says.

Rather than seeing AI as a threat to creativity, Lindsay views it as an accelerator. Whether designing AI-assisted music videos for her sister or enhancing her professional portfolio, she has learnt through the program ways to let AI complement — not replace — her human touch.

Through the 1-month program, Lindsay mastered prompt writing, learned the value of quantifying creativity, and sharpened her time management skills. Despite the workload being more intense than expected, she found joy in the Afrocentric community and even launched her own initiative, Artificially Intelligent Africans, to connect technologists across the continent.

"Students underestimate the importance of networking. It’s not just about getting the certificate — it’s about learning from each other."

Now, Lindsay is stepping into consultancy, integrating AI into all aspects of her work — and aiming to teach others to do the same.

Lindsey says that she learnt so many new AI tools that have opened new paths for her that she never imagined possible and all integral to her growing portfolio as an AI-driven creative professional.. Her favorite AI tools that she learnt from the program are:

Joey: There's a common misconception that tech is difficult for women. Did a career in tech come naturally to you?

Dalal: Actually, I had no background in tech. My degree is in dentistry, which I completed last year. Unfortunately, a war broke out in my country after I graduated, which disrupted all my plans. I started exploring other skills to learn, and that’s when I discovered web development.

I began with short online courses that gave me a basic introduction, but I didn’t feel they were enough to build real expertise. That’s when I found ALX. I applied impulsively, got accepted, and started my journey on March 11, 2024.

The first two months were all about foundations—soft skills, teamwork, and tackling global challenges. It was eye-opening and very beneficial. In May, we started the four-month Front-End Web Development track, covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related frameworks. It was challenging, with long nights and tight deadlines, but it was also rewarding. The community and mentorship were amazing.

Joey: Before joining ALX, had you ever coded or worked with tools like Git and VS Code?

Dalal: My experience was minimal. I’d taken a two- or three-week online course on HTML and CSS, but I hadn’t touched JavaScript or any advanced tools. Everything beyond that, I learned through ALX.

Joey: You mentioned the two-month foundation program. Were the skills you gained there helpful?

Dalal: Definitely. Initially, I was surprised we weren’t jumping straight into coding, but the foundation phase was crucial. The content was dense, and weekly milestones kept us on our toes. It felt like being a full-time student.

One standout moment was the team project, where we designed an app addressing a global challenge. I served as project manager and backup UX researcher. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me build leadership and collaboration skills.

Joey: You don’t seem like an introvert, but you’ve said you are. How did you navigate the community-driven aspect of the program?

Dalal: It wasn’t easy, but my approach was simple: jump in, no second-guessing. It’s uncomfortable at first, but taking those steps opened so many opportunities. My advice to introverts is to take it one step at a time. Push yourself—you’ll grow from it.

Joey: Let’s talk about the Front-End track. What was the curriculum like?

Dalal: It was well-structured but intense. We started with HTML and CSS, then moved on to JavaScript, which took the most time. JavaScript was both challenging and exciting because it brought projects to life.

We also learned React, Tailwind CSS, and state management libraries like Zustand. For my capstone project, I built a movie database app using React and Tailwind. It allowed users to search for movies, view details like cast and ratings, and even favorite them.

Joey: What kind of support did you receive during the program?

Dalal: The support was phenomenal. Our mentors, Andrew and Alfred, held frequent sessions to ensure no one was left behind. During the capstone phase, we had daily support sessions. The peer community was also incredible; we helped and motivated each other throughout.

Joey: As an introvert, how did you cope with the collaborative nature of the program?

Dalal: It was a challenge, but I forced myself to dive in. Overthinking only makes it harder. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I realized how much growth and opportunity come from collaboration.

Joey: The program required a financial investment. Was it worth it?

Dalal: Absolutely. ALX offers high-quality programs that would typically cost thousands of dollars at a fraction of the price. Beyond the technical skills, it’s the mentorship, community, and personal growth that make it invaluable.

Joey: If you could improve one thing about the program, what would it be?

Dalal: Maybe slow down the pace a little or break the content into smaller chunks. The intensity can be overwhelming, especially for those juggling other commitments. That said, the motto is “Do Hard Things,” and it pushes you to grow.

Joey: What are your plans after graduation?

Dalal: My focus is on building more projects, enhancing my skills, and creating a strong portfolio. Coming from a healthcare background, I’m also interested in exploring how technology and healthcare can intersect in the future.

Joey: Any final advice for young women or aspiring Africans looking to break into tech?

Dalal: Seize every opportunity, even if it scares you. It’s better to try and learn than to regret not trying. Push yourself, build your skills, and remember that Africa needs us to rise and make an impact.

Joy: Let’s start with a quick introduction. Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to ALX.

Stella: Sure! My name is Stella Kariuki. I’m an ALX learner currently enrolled in the Front-End Developer program. Before this, I was actually an accountant, but last year, I got really interested in tech, especially building apps and websites. So, I started learning on my own through online resources like FreeCodeCamp and W3Schools, but I soon realized I wanted a community and a more structured program, which I found with ALX at the start of 2024.

Joy: That’s amazing! There’s often a misconception that tech is especially tough for women. Did this journey come naturally for you? Or was it something you had to work up to?

Stella: I believe tech is for everyone! I didn’t have a tech background—I was in accounting, after all. But once I got interested in building things, I dove right in. I was self-learning until I saw an ALX ad on YouTube. That led me to look deeper into their programs, and I ended up applying for the Front-End course.

Joy: Love it! Part of joining ALX means paying for the program. Did you feel confident about investing in yourself this way?

Stella: Definitely! ALX offers a lot of value, especially with its sponsorship and the way they structure the program. You gain so much, from foundational knowledge to soft skills. So, it wasn’t hard to decide; I knew I’d be getting great value.

Joy: Speaking of foundations, you start with an eight-week Foundation Program before diving into front-end coding. Was that surprising for you?

Stella: Yes, actually! I expected to jump right into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but the foundation program really prepared me with essential skills. It taught me to research and learn independently, which is crucial in tech.

Joy: And then you got into the Front-End program! How did that go? What did you learn, and was it what you expected?

Stella: It was everything I expected and more. I’d already taught myself some basics like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but ALX introduced me to new tools and deeper concepts, like using APIs, Git and GitHub, and testing code. It’s challenging, but the program is eye-opening.

Joy: I hear that! The learning never stops, does it? Was there any support that helped you along the way?

Stella: Absolutely. The ALX community is fantastic, and our mentors, like Andrew and Alfred, were always there to help. I also connected with like-minded learners, which made a big difference.

Joy: Now you’re wrapping up with your capstone project. What are you building?

Stella: I’m creating a weather dashboard using React and Tailwind CSS. I had built a simpler one before, but this one includes advanced features like seven-day forecasts, humidity, and wind speed. It’s been a great challenge!

Joy: Amazing work! Do you see a way to merge your accounting background with front-end development?

Stella: Not really—I’m all-in on front-end development now. But tech is a journey; who knows where it might lead?

Joy: So true! Any final words of advice for those considering a journey in tech or ALX?

Stella: My advice is simple: believe in yourself. You’re capable of whatever you set your mind to. The journey won’t be easy, but go all-in and stay dedicated. Tech is demanding, but with the right attitude, you’ll succeed!

Abdulbasit Kayode Imam recently made the bold decision to transition into the tech world, joining the ALX Front-End Web Development program. Currently still pursuing his undergraduate studies, Abdulbasit saw the potential of technology to enhance his skills and future career prospects, which led him to explore educational opportunities in the field of web development.

His journey into tech began in April, when he enrolled in the AiCE program offered by ALX. The experience, he says, was transformative, as it allowed him to acquire skills he hadn’t imagined possible within a short time. This inspired him to continue his learning journey with ALX hence he joined the Front-End Web Development program.

ALX 8-weeks Foundations Course

One of the initial surprises Abdulbasit encountered after joining the program was the eight-week ALX Foundations course. This mandatory first phase, focused on soft skills, came as a bit of a shock as Abdulbasit had expected to jump straight into coding. However, he quickly realized the value of this phase. The Foundations course is designed to equip learners with essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and time management—skills that are crucial for succeeding not only in the tech industry but in any career. Through the Foundations phase, Abdulbasit had the opportunity to work with small groups of fellow learners, which helped him improve his communication skills and fostered a collaborative mindset. "The Foundation phase helped us connect with other learners in groups," Abdulbasit recalled. "It really enhanced my communication skills and prepared me for what was to come in the program."

ALX Front-End Web Development program curriculum

After completing the Foundations course, he then moved on to the core Front-End curriculum, where he began working with technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React. These tools formed the foundation of his skills as a front-end developer, and the real-world applications and projects he worked on gave him both technical competence and confidence. "The hands-on projects helped me not only develop technical skills but also gave me the confidence to tackle complex problems," Abdulbasit noted.

Throughout the program, Abdulbasit emphasized the importance of the support he received from the community. He particularly appreciated the mentorship provided by experienced program mentors like Andrew and Alfred whose guidance and encouragement were instrumental in his growth. Additionally, being part of a vibrant learning community of talented individuals from across Africa gave him the motivation to keep improving himself.

Abdulbasit states that although some may shy away due to the payment requirements, he believes the value far outweighs the price. "I have taken various programs in web development, but ALX stands out as a game-changer. I’m glad I invested in this program, and I would recommend it to anyone," he said. He further quips that there is an option to pay monthly, which can make the program more affordable. "The payment options are flexible. You can pay at the end of each month, which makes it easier to manage," he shared.

For his end of program capstone project, Abdulbasit created a recipe finder application that allows users to search for, save, and view detailed recipes. This project exemplified the skills he had acquired throughout his journey, from coding to problem-solving, and demonstrated his growing competence as a front-end developer.

In closing, Abdulbasit had some words of wisdom for those considering the ALX program but still hesitant. "The program is rigorous, but it’s worth it," he said. "The skills you gain will stay with you forever. If you’re thinking about joining, just register and start—you won’t regret it."

In today’s rapidly evolving tech world, individuals from diverse backgrounds are increasingly transitioning into software engineering. Pinto Okowa, an environmental engineer based in Belgium, is one such individual. He decided to shift to software development through the ALX 6-month Back-End program, which offers even global learners with Africa roots, the chance to acquire cutting-edge skills in software engineering. Pinto’s story is one of determination and passion, showcasing the transformative power of accessible learning.

Pinto’s journey began when he reconnected with a former university classmate on LinkedIn. His friend had completed the ALX software engineering program, sparking Pinto’s interest in a field he had long been curious about. Despite his background in environmental engineering, Pinto had always wanted to create and build things. Software engineering provided the ideal platform to pursue that passion.

After researching the ALX program, Pinto applied, impressed by the program's affordability compared to similar tech courses in Europe. At a very low facilitation fee, ALX provided a valuable and heavily subsidized investment in his career all thanks to the MasterCard Foundation. Though his shift from environmental engineering to software development might seem drastic, Pinto saw connections between the fields. How ALX Foundations Helps Learners Build More Than Just Coding Skills

Before beginning the core curriculum, Pinto completed the eight-week ALX Foundations program, which focuses on essential soft skills like time management, professional presentation, and teamwork. Although he initially expected to jump straight into coding, Pinto quickly recognized the value of these skills, especially in balancing a full-time job with the program’s rigorous demands. The ALX 6-month Back-End learning program offers more than just coding instruction—it provides a well-rounded educational experience. While students often expect to dive directly into coding, ALX first focuses on pitching ideas, managing time, and presenting projects—critical skills for entrepreneurial and tech-driven careers. The ALX Back-End program technical curriculum

Once the foundations course was complete, Pinto began the core back-end curriculum, which builds skills and knowledge progressively in web frameworks, text editors like VS Code, programming languages like Python, and database management with SQL. This structured approach helped Pinto feel confident in his learning, especially compared to previous courses he had taken, which lacked clear organization and progression.

Pinto appreciates how ALX prepares students for real-world challenges, equipping them not only with knowledge but also practical skills. Though he hasn’t completed the course yet, he has already started applying for jobs, feeling confident in his abilities. Pinto is currently working on his capstone project, a social media API, motivated by his frustrations with existing platforms. He aims to create a solution that enhances user experience. The skills and knowledge gained from ALX have given him the confidence to tackle real-world problems.

Meet Godfred Awudi

Godfred Awudi is a dynamic student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunication Engineering and Computer Science, specializing in Software Engineering at ALX as part of the 19th cohort. Hailing from Amasaman, Ghana, Godfred is passionate about data science and artificial intelligence. He envisions using these cutting-edge technologies to develop innovative solutions for real-world challenges.

Currently, Godfred is leading a project aimed at promoting mental wellness through technology, specifically targeting young adults and adolescents dealing with emotional distress. Driven by the often-overlooked issue of mental health among African youth, he is determined to use his software engineering skills to address this critical need. His project provides accessible mental health support through an online platform, offering users anonymity as they seek assistance from professional counselors. By destigmatizing mental health and providing practical solutions, Godfred's initiative aims to transform lives and foster a healthier society.

Meet Perry Kwabena Amoako

Perry Kwabena Amoako, another standout student, is in his final year of a Bachelor of Science program in Information Technology Management, with a specialization in mobile application development and AI research. Perry's journey is deeply personal, shaped by witnessing his brother’s battle with a serious illness, which has inspired his lifelong mission.

Raised in a humble but noble household, Perry’s life changed dramatically when his brother was diagnosed with a tumor following what initially seemed like a minor injury. Despite medical interventions, including an MRI scan and a biopsy, his brother eventually underwent an amputation, a life-altering experience for Perry and his family.

Determined to turn adversity into opportunity, Perry is driven by the vision of revolutionizing cancer detection using AI and machine learning. His dream is to develop a technology capable of identifying cancer cells at their earliest stages through simple blood samples, reducing the need for invasive procedures and enabling early interventions. By championing the mantra "Disability is not inability," Perry seeks to empower individuals facing health challenges and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

In a world where technology often seems dominated by men, Effie's story shines brightly as a tale of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of one's dreams against all odds. Effie, a former graphic designer turned backend developer, is a source of inspiration for women in tech everywhere.

Effie's journey began in November 2022 while she was working in graphic design and animation. Her love for creating animations led her to explore ways to make the process faster and more efficient. This exploration introduced her to coding—using scripts to automate tasks that once took hours.

Driven by curiosity, Effie began learning to code during her lunch breaks, devouring online tutorials. Her passion for learning eventually led her to ALX, a tech education program, where she immersed herself in programming challenges.

"The beginning was tough," she admits. "From mastering C-programming to navigating Python and DevOps, each step was a new challenge."

Despite initial setbacks, Effie remained determined to pursue backend development—a field less explored by those from a graphics background. Her determination to achieve her dreams was her driving force, leading her to quit her job just to focus on her goals.

"After starting with frontend development, I realized I wanted more," she reflects. "I wanted to understand the deeper mechanics that make apps work seamlessly."

Effie's breakthrough came when she chose to specialize in backend development, even though she initially fell behind her peers. Her specialization project became a defining moment—a culmination of 15 months of hard work during which she developed a groundbreaking solution for efficient app deployment and management.

"For my project, I aimed to ensure apps not only function but thrive globally," she explains enthusiastically.

Effie's solution involved containerization, deploying apps on AWS cloud, and automating processes with Terraform—an approach that ensured apps could scale, stay secure, and reach users worldwide within minutes.

"In a few clicks, any app could be set up and managed efficiently," Effie elaborates. "It's about making technology accessible and robust for everyone."

Today, Effie stands as a role model for women in tech, proving that with determination and perseverance, any dream is achievable.

In a world where dreams meet determination, Effie desires to see coding integrated into the early learning curriculum. She believes that if she had known these skills earlier, she would have been unstoppable. This affected his ability to attend and finish his highschool education. He had to travel to Dubai to live with his extended family and work as an autocad designer and a jeweler, while supporting his family.

However, the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic brought his endeavors to a halt, leaving him adrift and uncertain about the future, Coincidentally, he stumbled upon ALX while perusing his Facebook feed and was instantly captivated by its vision and values. What began as a serendipitous encounter swiftly transformed into a life-altering opportunity, reshaping his narrative in profound ways.

Navigating through initial challenges, Asad found solace in the unwavering support of technical mentors and abundant study resources provided by ALX. Graduating with exemplary software engineering skills, he continued to expand his knowledge through supplementary programs, including Udacity, virtual assistant and financial analyst courses. Armed with newfound expertise, Asad seized an opportunity presented by the South African city team, securing a pivotal role in hub operations, data management, and finance.

Today, Asad leverages his proficiency in tools like Google Sheets and API integration to drive impactful change within his community while providing for his family. His journey epitomizes the transformative power of education and resilience, underscoring ALX’s unwavering commitment to fostering lasting social change through skill development.

Remember why you started, in the first place.

Meet Matilda Dogbatsey, a Ghanaian based photographer, filmmaker, music video director and an aspiring software engineer.  Last month, we had the honour of interacting with Matilda, who shared her experience as an SE student at ALX.

Change has the power to show us new horizons, or to blind us to the life we have. For Matilda, change was a blessing. Her life seemed to pause, when she got married and was expecting a child. She couldn’t travel as often as she wanted to, or actively engage in her usual activities. 

The opportunity to learn software engineering arose at the perfect time; one she leaped at. This kept her active and engaged. Matilda values the power of growth. She invested in herself even when it was difficult, as she was cognizant of the need to evolve into a better version of who she was.

Being new to Software Engineering wasn’t always easy. It initially sounded like Greek to her, and she had no idea how she would catch up. Nonetheless, she found her rhythm and began to fall in love with this decision. “Having an all women cohort was what I truly needed,” she said. She found a family and a tribe, which related with her unique experiences as a woman. She found like-minded people, who shared similar interests, and circumstances while pursuing the software engineering course. It wasn’t always easy to meet people who would understand what it meant to have a child, manage a home and a family  while studying.

During her journey, Matilda has experienced some difficulties along the way. These have taught her the value of a support system. Being in an all-women cohort surrounded her with strong women who encouraged her to keep going. Her ultimate motivation, even in the toughest times, was the constant reminder of why she started in the first place. Right from the beginning, this fueled her focus, to the extent of attending her class orientation in the labor ward! Her growth was so vital to her, she managed to persevere and to keep studying even through postpartum depression. For her, quitting was never an option. As an African woman, she seeks to redefine cultural stereotypes, by proving that women are more than homemakers, and are fully capable of doing hard things!

Fusing tech and software has now become an exciting journey for her. This experience has taught her to think outside the box, to create realities yet to be seen, but mostly, it has empowered her to know her dreams are not only valid, they are also possible. 

After all is said and done, Matilda desires to fuse her media skills with the skills she has acquired at ALX SE, to create a platform, through which she can share African content  in stock images, stills and motion graphics. Being a student at ALX has given her this foundation, but more importantly, it has taught her to learn, and she does not intend on quitting.

Meet Laide Enely, an educator, and a programmer,  pursuing her dream in Software Engineering at ALX. Her ultimate dream is to be an educator who makes learning a fun and easy experience through her software engineering skills.

For Laide, Software engineering has always been a passion, and a talent. Since she was 16, she was always drawn to Software engineering. Being a part of the ALX SE software engineering has awakened her passion for problem solving, a fundamental quality of any educator and an ALX SE student. We do hard things!

Her love for software engineering made it difficult for her to blend in with her mates, even while a child. Many were surprised at this, because of her femininity. Nonetheless, she didn’t quit pursuing her dreams. From being one of 3 girls in her first SE classes to being a part of a huge community of women in ALX, doing hard things, Laide has not let anything stop her from pursuing her dreams. Eventually, those who doubted her, soon met with the reality that in fact, she was a force to be reckoned with.

A king maker in her own stead, Laide has nurtured the talent within all those with the privilege of being taught by her to go further in life, and has inspired many, to pursue software engineering just like her. She is one of many women breaking boundaries, and redefining the culture of this world. After doing her portfolio project, she reaffirmed her love for SE, and her potential and capability to revolutionize education systems for children. She believes that learning can be fun and easy, and she dreams to create a platform through which children can learn more efficiently.

She also is cognizant of the difficulties that arise with starting this great journey in software engineering. Nonetheless, she is very intentional about her support system and relying on it for strengths when she lacks it. “Be vocal about your problems, and reach out for help!” she insists. For Laide, life should never be done alone. Our support systems lighten our burdens very significantly and make our lives much better. This is how she managed to pursue the course without quitting. 

MARIAM IBRAHIM

Anything you want to do may potentially be hard;  if you quit, because of hardship, you may have to quit forever. Look around;  you will find that help was right around the corner, for you’re never alone.

Meet Mariam, an electrical engineering student, who always had the dream to be a software engineer. After not attaining her dream course, in software engineering, Mariam chose to pursue electrical engineering. But not all hope was lost for her. She found out about the ALX Software Engineering program, one which she took up without hesitation. The miracle of pursuing her dream career without having to pay for it was a beacon of hope for her, one which she has never taken for granted.

Coincidentally, the skills acquired in her software engineering classes have made her electrical engineering classes much easier. She came to the full appreciation of the quality of the ALX SE course when she saw that the skills taught in her SE classes were vital for her coding classes in her electrical engineering classes. Her knowledge from these classes set her ahead of her classmates and made what was once a course she didn’t desire to learn, more doable, and something she was good at. 

Her dream is to create a learning management system eventually. She is cognizant of the vacuum in the current learning systems, which came to light during the COVID 19 pandemic. The reality that schools had to close without alternative means of teaching students during the pandemic in her nation sparked this concern within her; one she hopes to solve. She desires to create a  learning management system which is flexible enough to remain relevant and applicable regardless of the circumstances within the world. 

For Mariam, quitting is never meant to be an option, because difficulties are an inevitable part of life. “Anything you want to do may potentially be hard;  if you quit, because of hardship, you may have to quit forever.” She believes that we will always experience some form of hardships in life and we should always supersede the fear of failure. Beyond our fears, we shall realize that we are never alone. There is a family and a community around us willing to help and support us. Don’t quit doing hard things!

1. You were part of cohort 1 and amongst the pioneer cohorts of the #ALX_SE program, what was the application process like back then?

My name is Silvia Muthangya and I was part of the #ALX_SE cohort 1. The initial application process involved sharing a link and filling in details. The current application process I would say is more beginner friendlier focusing more on mindset and behavior questions. When I joined cohort 1, having some coding knowledge was crucial because you were required to create a website within a week as part of the application process. 

2. Entering the field, especially for young women, is often seen as challenging. How was your overall experience in the program?

Entering ALX software engineering while already in university had its challenges, but it was mostly enjoyable. Juggling between university and the program required careful handling. Balancing both was facilitated by having a supportive community and leveraging available resources. Collaboration was a significant aspect of the program, and finding partners for projects was crucial. Building a trusted network was essential to overcome challenges and complete projects successfully. However, I think I was also lucky because my undergraduate course and the #ALX_SE program mirrored each other which made it easy for me to balance them. The degree was a little more theoretical while the #ALX_SE program is very hands-on hence they complemented each other.

3. Speaking of projects, which one was your favorite, and which one posed the most significant challenge?

The Airbnb clone project was the most challenging due to its specialization requirements. Most projects involved finding partners, emphasizing the program's community-based nature. I think the aspect of attracting good and collaborative partners was a challenge but I overcame it by building a trusted circle around me. You have to be very intentional about building a support system of peers around you while in the program because it makes the journey very light and enjoyable. 

I really enjoyed working on the other projects including the specialization portfolio project. At the time I joined the program, you had the option to finish the program in nine months or proceed to specialization and I chose to proceed. I, therefore, again came together with some of my trusted peers to deliberate on what to build for the portfolio project. Deciding on a specialization involved an ideation process where we considered various ideas based on their feasibility and requirement and settled on the best one by unanimous decision.

4. After graduating, what were your next steps? Did you automatically consider the Gold Fellowship, or did it come to your attention later?

At the time I graduated, the gold fellowship had not yet come into existence at least publicly to my knowledge. I got straight into applying for roles and after some rejections, I finally landed a role as a DevOps Engineer. My job application process involved applying broadly for roles that I felt fit my experience and skills. My current role involves handling both development and operations tasks. A typical day includes problem-solving, coding, and continuous learning. 

I later received an email detailing what the gold fellowship is all about together with an invitation to apply. The career support aspects of it such as exclusive events, access to a working space and a pathfinder really captivated me. The pathfinder pack was especially fascinating in terms of having a personal career advocate who finds opportunities and even takes on salary negotiations for you to ensure you get a good deal. I applied and I was accepted and so far it has been a great ride.

5. For those currently in the program or about to graduate, what are your final words of wisdom regarding job expectations and the post-program journey?

I would advise them not to obsess so much about what comes post-program but focus on building value. It is okay to think about the post-program journey but it is more crucial to focus on building your skills and your portfolio while in the program. This means being very diligent in undertaking tasks as well as jumping on various projects that you can then showcase on your CV as proof of ability to deliver on the job. This is what I mean by building your value and once your value is solid, everything else will fall into place post-program.
